Covers recovering vehicles from situations where a winch is required to place the casualty in a position from where it can be removed. It also covers the safety requirements of using a winch.
By the end of the course the student will be able to;
- Define the health and safety requirements applicable to the use of a recovery winch unit
- Describe the variations in winch construction
- Describe winch theory
- Describe the types of winch rope used in vehicle recovery and the inspection and maintenance regimes used for them
- Demonstrate how to use the different types of ancillary equipment used in winching operations
- Calculate resistances to winching and determine the winch power required for a given situation
- Demonstrate how to change the direction of pull on a winch rope
- Describe how the position of the casualty may affect the winching operation
- Demonstrate how to winch a casualty using a 2:1 pull through 90°
- Demonstrate the hand signals used to direct a winch operator
Subject Areas
- The student will be able to demonstrate, the correct methods of calculating the loads, equipment requirements and lay-up of the equipment for a given recovery situation
